SEFRADIM: THE JEWISH FROM THE LANDS OF THE SUN
The volume, in album format, consists of more than 500 antique postcards (from 1895 to 1945) gathered together after a lengthy period of historic, religious and cultural research undertaken in the vast Parisian archive belonging to the collector Gérard Silvain. Similar to a photo essay, the images lead us to the heart of Sephardic Judaism in all its facets, uniting for the first time the extraordinary variety of its peoples: from the ?“pure?” origins of those in Spain, to the first Jews of the Arab lands, to the ?“Jews of elsewhere?” originating in the most unsuspecting lands. The postcard functions as an historic and ethnographic document which, accompanied by authoritative texts and commentaries, serves to under-line the multiethnic character of the Jewish people, to discover the social and cultural varieties of Sephardic communities, following half a century of Jewish history through images.
