VON GLOEDEN PHOTOGRAPHS
Having arrived in Italy in 1878 for health reasons, Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden devoted himself to photography, showing evidence from the very beginning of his great artistic ability. He was encouraged and appreciated by the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, at whose home at Francavilla he was a guest for a while. He frequented the Italian cultural circles, coming to know personages such as Gabriele D?’Annunzio and Costantino Barbella. In 1893 he won a medal at the exhibition of the Photographic Society of London. Von Gloeden?’s photographic work is centred on the representation of compositions with a classical taste, in which the presence of male nudes refers to a knowledge of the Winckelmanian culture of the ?“rules of beauty?” and of artistic formulas with an Arcadian and mythological flavour.
