HORSES AND MOTORS
All means of transport that have ploughed the streets and squares of Florence are documented here, starting from 1865 when, in coincidence with the transferring of the capital from Turin and the beginning of the grandiose city-planning revolution conceived by Giuseppe Poggi, a modern transportation system was created. Then there were the omnibuses (horse-drawn carriages that could carry up to twelve people) that crossed the city with pre-established routes and timetables. The first tramway lines were activated starting in 1879, linking the centre of the city with the main surrounding localities of Prato, Campi, Poggio a Caiano, Rovezzano, Bagno a Ripoli, Sesto, Settignano, and - later - even Greve and San Casciano.
