The cycle of frescoes of the ?“Legenda della Vera Croce?” in Arezzo and the ?“Madonna del Parto?” at Monterchi, realised by Piero della Francesca, is among the greatest expressions of the Italian Renaissance, and has been the object of an important work of restoration that engaged numerous scholars and scientists in the preliminary historical and diagnostic study. Modern analytic techniques and, above all, the application of photography - with all its possibilities - have made possible a knowledge of the works in their most hidden details, facilitating the subsequent restoration work. The result, as published in this volume, constitutes the most in-depth and detailed visual analysis made of a Renaissance work of art, and brings to light a new dimension of Piero della Francesca?’s art.
