FIESOLE IN THE '800
In the 19th century, Fiesole and its territory lived one of its moments of greatest splendour, becoming an international microcosm of artistic and literary culture of the century. The hill of Fiesole and its extended territory found in the 19th century a strong impulse to the transformation and ?‘re-discovery?’ of its own monuments, offering incentives for works both of archaeological and architectural ?“restoration?” and of town-planning expansion. Starting from the neoclassical intervention on the church of Sant?’Alessandro, it continued with the archaeological excavation campaigns that brought to light the Roman Theatre, with the realisation of the Museum in 1878, and with the radical rebuilding in neo-medieval style of the castles of Vincigliata and Castel di Poggio.
