THE PROCESSION OF THE MAGI
This biblical episode displays beautiful finery and gorgeous costumes that seem to belong to a fairy world of charm and gaiety that at the same time vividly depicts contemporary life. This masterpiece by Benozzo Gozzoli was painted between 1459 and 1463 and is one of the few frescos where the largest variety of different colors has been used. It covers three walls of a Chapel in Medici Riccardi Palace in Florence. The Chapel of the Magi occupies an important place in the Medici Palace which Cosimo the Elder built, starting in about 1444, in accordance to the architectural design by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo. In this painting we can appreciate the portraits of the most influent personalities of '400, but also, it is said, the portrait of Benozzo himself. In this chapel we can admire a foundamental piece of Italian Art that is also one of the most important document of Reinassance history.
