GUIDORICCIO OF FOGLIANO
This large fresco is found in the Town Hall of Siena. The end wall of the Sala del Mappamondo, opposite to the wall containing Simone's Maesta, is entirely covered by this fresco depicting the famous commander Guidoriccio with defeated fortresses in the background. This painting had always been considered the greatest example of Simone's artistic excellence It was painted by Simone Martini in Siena in 1328, to commemorate the conquest of the Castles of Montemassi and Sassoforte by the Captain General of the Senese Army, Guidoriccio da Fogliano.
