FLORENCE
According to statistics produced by UNESCO, 60% of the world's most important works of art are located in Italy and approximately half of these are in Florence. Florence lies at the foot of the Tosco-Emilian Eppenines, in the large plan cut by the Arno river and surrounded by hills. In 1183 the city became a free Commune. This period witnessed an upsurge in arts; this was the period of Dante and Giotto. Florence was a trading city but also a new cradle for Italian and european culture. Many powerful families contented the supremacy of the city, but finally an important family of bankers, the Medici, distinguised themselves, making Florenc ethe leading city dirong the period of Humanism and the Renaissance. Personalities as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo worked here during that period. For a brief period Florence was also the capital of Italy.
