ART AND HISTORY OF SICILY
This guide is a precious aid to the tourist who goes to Sicily looking for something more than sun and the splendid blue of the Mediterranean. We have the magnificent temples of Agrigento, Selinunte, and Segesta, mute testimony to the grandeur of Magna Graecia; the Roman theaters of Taormina and Syracuse; the exceptional mosaics of the Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina. From the Norman period we have the flowering of Byzantine andArab art, for example in Palermo's Cathedral, its Church of San Giovanni degliEremiti and its Norman Palace and Palatine Chapel. In the latter, as well as in the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale, the art of mosaic is raised to inestimable stylistic heights. Sicilian art of the 15th and 16th centuries owesmuch to the genius of Antonello da Messina, whose works may be seen in the Palermo and Cefalù museums. Sicilian Baroque (17th-18th centuries) meritsa chapter all its own in any history of art.
