ART AND HISTORY OF PISA
Pisa is universally known as "the city of the Leaning Tower", but homesmany other monuments of historical andartistic interest. In the Piazza dei Miracoli, stands the Cathedral and the Baptistery, outstanding examples of that peculiararchitectural style known as Pisan Romanesque, works to which the greatestmasters of the architectural art of the 12th and 13th centuries contributed, andthe Monumental Cemetery, with rescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli and the extraordinary Triumph of Death, of uncertain attribution. And the square has still more to offer: the Museo delle Sinopie and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo,both containing a wealth of works. Standing right on the Arno river, is the Church of Santa Maria della Spina, a jewel of late Gothic architecture;further along, the solemnly Baroque Piazza dei Cavalieri, with the Church of theKnights of Malta and the palace of their Order, since 1810 the home of theprestigious Scuola Normale Superiore.
