THE GALLERIA DELL'ACCADEMIA
The Galleria dell'Accademia houses the world famous statue of David by Michelangelo which was moved from its original position in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. The David soon became the symbol of this Gallery, if not of Florence itself. The four very moving "Prigioni" (prisoners or slaves) and St. Matthew, all sculpted by Michelangelo, were also transported to the Accademia. This guide describes the interesting history of the contents of its rooms, which house works dating from the Byzantine to the 18th Century.
