CARAVAGGIO
Caravaggio was a forcefully innovative painter and his mark remained deeply impressed on the entire course of western painting. In the 1540s the prevailing artistic style in Europe was late mannerism which was a style based on developing and varying the works of the great masters of the first quarter of the Century: Raphael, Michelangelo, Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino. As a result no important developments took place. Caravaggio's style was a reaction to mannerism, it offered a new and promising path which led towards naturalism.
