ITINERARY

The mainly gothic palazzo Contarini Minelli dal Bovolo, built on 1499 by Giovanni Candi, is well known for the winding-stairs, the Scala del Bovolo. Its name derives from the spiral staircase (in Italian "scala a chiocciola", snail-shell, that in Venice is called bovolo). The palace is a characteristic Lombardesque construction; in the enclosure there are some well-heads, one of Venetian-Byzantine style (11th century) and various ornamental fragments, and in its interior you can admire many paintings by Sebastiano Ricci, Longhi, Tiepolo and Molinari. At the top there is a loggia covered by a cupola offering you a beautiful panorama.

CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DEI FRARI

It is one of the biggest churches in Venice; it is a Franciscan church, originally built in the mid-13th century and rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th Century. Facade is characterized by a pointed door and by the magnificent statue of Jesus by sculptor A. Vittoria. Interior has three naves with a latin cross plan and keeps important masterpieces of Venetian art. This important example of Venetian Gothic ecclesiastical architecture contains many masterpieces of Venetian Renaissance art, including Giovanni Bellini's triptych Madonna and Child with Saints, and Assumption and Pesaro Madonna by Titian, buried in this church. The church houses also unique sculptures, including Donatello's San Giovanni Battista, and monuments to Jacopo Marcello and Beato Pacifico.

CANAL GRANDE

Canal Grande is the main thoroughfare through Venice; it is lined with magnificent palaces, and crossed by three bridges: Ponte degli Scalzi, Ponte di Rialto,and Ponte dell'Accademia. It weaves for 3.5 kilometers through the city, with a depth of about 6 meters and a width ranging from 40 to 100 meters.
Among the most important buildings facing on Canal Grande is found one of the most celebrated Veneto-Byzantine buildings, the Fondaco dei Turchi, which now houses the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale. Farther, is located Palazzo Vendramin, where Richard Wagner died in 1883 and that now houses the Casino. To the right of the Canal is found Ca' Pesaro, housing the Galleria d'Arte Moderna and Museo Orientale.
Shortly after, is located Ca' d'Oro, acclaimed as the most beautiful Gothic building in Venice, the Fabbriche Vecchie and Fabbriche Nuove, and tje Fondaco dei Tedeschi, once the most important trading house on the canal that now houses the main post office.
Other important buildings are Palazzo Grimani, Palazzo Corner Spinelli, Ca' Foscari, Palazzo Grassi and Ca' Rezzonico, that houses the 18th century art collection. Canal Grande ends with Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, Palazzo Corner, Ca' Grande and the magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute.
