Murano Glass Museum and Burano Lace Museum

VERSIONE ITALIANA

MURANO GLASS MUSEUM

Glass Museum is located in the Palazzo Giustinian near the Murano island center. The museum holds samples of glass from Egyptian times through the present day, and the displays show how the art and manufacture of glass developed over the centuries.

Founded in 1861, the museum is one of the best lit and best displayed. A large sculpture by American glass artist Dale Chihuly stands in the entrance; on the ground floor are located delicate vases and bowls from the first to third centuries AD. On the stairway to the second floor are reproductions of 14th-century and later illustrations of the craft of glass-making. Materials and tools of the glass blowers trade are also presented.

The subsequent rooms contain examples of glass made in Murano through the centuries, including an eighteenth-century dining table-size centerpiece depicting a formal garden and comprised of several individual pieces. In the main room on the second floor, a beautifyl rococo ceiling painting and an immense chandelier. Another delight of the museum is its garden, with trees, grass, roses, lavender, and benches.

BURANO LACE MUSEUM

The word "merletto"(lace), which appeared in Venetian documents as early as the 15th century, comes from the word "merli" which means the architectural elements that decorated medieval buildings, and later, the palaces of Venice in Flamboyant Gothic style.

The museum opened its doors in 1981, in the 14th-century Palazzo Rodotà, the former building of the School of Lace founded in 1872 by the Countess Adriano Marcello. You can admire all the beautiful lace produced on this island for centuries. The exhibition includes some very valuable pieces, drawings, photographs, personal journals and work techniques.
The exhibit is quite complete, and the former school for lace makers, famous all over the world, hasn't been left out. In the 17th century, Venetian lace was a real sign of prestige.
